Support Services

The Institute is very conscious that for many learners, living and studying in Australia may be a novel and sometimes challenging experience, and for this reason, it provides a number of additional services which learners may find helpful prior to their arrival and while they are studying at the Institute.

Arrivals

On request, the Institute can arrange to pick up international/overseas learners from Sydney airport and transport them to pre-arranged accommodation. If an airport pick-up service is requested, additional charges apply.

Accommodation

Temporary and long-term accommodation arrangements can be made for learners on request. Those requiring pre-arranged accommodation should notify the Institute at least two weeks prior to their departure for Australia.

Banking

The Institute can assist international/overseas learners to open a local bank account. To open a bank account in Australia, identification such as a current passport, current driver’s license and a tax file number are required. Tax file numbers can be obtained from the Australian Taxation Office. Learners providing proof of their status, e.g. learner identity (ID) card, may be exempt from paying account opening fees and charges at many banks. Further information can be obtained from the Institute.

Common Areas

Learners are provided with a common room where they can relax and socialise between study periods, and for lunch. The common room has a small but well-equipped kitchen with a microwave, refrigerator and hot water.

Legal Advice Service

Learners should note that there are a number of agencies in the Australian community that offer inexpensive or free legal advice and help. The Legal Aid Office in each state will give free advice in short interviews, at certain times, to anyone. It will also give free legal help to persons with a limited income who are charged with some serious crimes.

Accidents

The Institute takes occupational health and safety very seriously, ensuring it is compliant with all laws and regulations. The Institute provides information ensuring that all learners, academic and administrative staff are fully aware of their individual and collective occupational health and safety responsibilities.

In the unlikely event of a mishap, accident or any other situation, learners should promptly notify a responsible member of the Institute staff. First aid facilities are available at reception, and emergency services – ambulance, fire and police – can be contacted using 000 (please note: this number is not to be used for general enquiries, but is restricted to emergencies where a very speedy response is needed.
